After decades of working as a runway model, showcasing fashions by top designers like Christian Dior and Louis F?raud, West Vancouver's Taaja Kayler still has the swagger.

But in recent years, she's decided to step back from the limelight and give others a turn on the catwalk.

"I'm at the point in my life, where I want to give something back," says Kayler, whose modeling career began at 16 after she was discovered at a department store. Looking back, this tall, long-lashed, blue-eyed blond says she was like every other young girl.

"I didn't have the confidence," she says.

But with a lifetime of modeling experience behind her and as a mother of two adult children, that's now changed -- Kayler's confidence is commanding just as much attention as her black knee-high boots. And, more recently, she has been spreading and sharing the secrets of self-assurance with other women. In fact, over the past year, Kayler has been working as a confidence coach, facilitating workshops for small groups of women. Her clients are taught the tools of her trade and coached on moves, such as "the walk," "the look," and "how to own the room."

"Having confidence means having self-worth and self-value, " Kayler says. "Showing this confidence through your walk is a tool that is available to everyone."

When I met with Kayler for an interview last week, I learned just why her business has, quite literally, taken off the runway. I brought a tape recorder and notepad to the meeting -- she brought a red carpet and a boombox. It wasn't what you would call a typical interview. Outside the North Vancouver RCMP detachment at 14th Street and Lonsdale, Kayler rolled out her portable red carpet in front of several unsuspecting office workers out sipping lattes on their mid-morning break.

"Follow me," she said, demonstrating the move she calls "the walk."

And so, with my pelvis tilted, shoulders back, head high, and elbows in -- I mimicked her steps to the rhythm of the song "I'm too sexy." Of course, coordinating the strut was not easy -- and surely, I didn't look "too sexy for New York or Milan." At best, I was "sexy enough for Red Deer."

But Kayler says what she teaches is not about being a model or even modeling. Instead, it's about showing others how they can radiate with self-confidence.

Leslie Horne, a marketing manager, looks back at her time with Kayler as a great learning experience. Horne's decision to enroll in the confidence workshop came about six months ago, after some of her friends pointed out that she "had a stiff walk." Since working with Kayler, Horne says she is more relaxed and confident.

"It really changed how I present myself, especially in different situations," she says.

In fact, a few weeks after taking the class, Horne decided to practice her newly acquired runway moves at the office.

"I walked over to the coffee machine and another woman said 'oh, don't you look sexy'" says Horne. "The compliment felt good."

For Kayler, moving with confidence is critical -- under every situation.

Another posing tip to remember is that you don’t always have to smile. You should have a good variety of smiling and serious looks. But, sometimes you will want to give a large, openmouthed laugh. If you are supposed to be happy, look the part!

Your Eyes are the Windows to Your Soul
Don’t always look straight into the camera. When you cut your eyes to the left or right, you create an air of mystery. When you look up and away, you are annoyed. Tilt your chin slightly down and look straight ahead for a sexy look.

About Blinking
Beware of the Blink! If you have to blink, try to blink between exposures. This is not always easy, especially if you are working in a photography studio. Some models get into a habit of anticipating the strobes and start to close their eyes when the picture is about to be snapped.

Get into the habit of not paying attention to the flash and concentrate wholly on the pose, your body language, hand position, etc. and your images will come out as you expect.

Christopher Kane - Barcodes and Beauty

London – Christopher Kane headed back to his pedigree - both Scottish and aesthetic - in a rather grown-up, maybe too much so, fall 2009 collection staged Sunday, Feb. 22, in London.

Where Kane has won himself a cult reputation for his avant garde ideas - everything from the exotic bondage dresses in multi-colored strands of nylon of 2007 to "Planet of the Apes," pre-historic "armadillo" dresses six months ago this season he seemed more interested in commercial credibility than with mixed vivid lines and the darkest plaid.

"Bar codes, where I wanted to get the graphic lines of my sketches into the clothes," was the designers cryptic explanation of his fall 2009 collection, where black lines ran vertically, horizontally and brokenly over see-through tulle and silk looks.

For such an iconoclastic designer, the iconic look this season was, in fact, surprisingly retro a lapel-free cardigan jacket that recalled a design first developed by Pierre Cardin and made famous by The Beatles.

Yet, there was also an airy feel to these clothes, where half the skirts and dresses were semi-transparent and several featured revealing panels.

Staged in the high-ceiling, underground show space of Top Shop - for whom Kane is a contributing designer - the show did soar for evening wear when models hit the catwalk in the semi-transparent Celtic chic. The standout image was a paneled sheer, graphic sleeveless cocktail.

One of MDC’s favorite casting directors Andrew Weir sent us a sneak peek of his backstage shots of Hugo Boss show which took place in one of our best loved cities, Berlin. New York, Paris and Milan may get the majority of fashion week attention but Berlin is where it’s at! The city’s burgeoning fashion scene is among the most exciting in the world, due in part to its inventive take on fashion.

Hugo Boss’ show did not disappoint - held in the world famous Great Pavilion at the Botanical Garden it featured some of MDC’s favorite faces. Toni Garrn, Constance Jablonski, Naty Chabanenko, Clement Chabernaud, Jamie Strachan and Vincent LaCrocq were all in attendance and shared in the backstage fun. Pre-teen model defends her role as the face of some fashion show

By now you will have heard of Maddison Gabriel , the pre-teen girl who has been named the face of some fashion modeling show in Queensland (who cares what show it is, one less piece of direct publicity is not going to hurt them). Maddison has defended her right to be the face and body of the fashion show with this piece of pre-teen logic:

“I believe that I can fit into women’s clothes, I can model women’s clothes, so I should be able to do it.”

I mean, just how many other ludicrous logical syllogisms can you come up with based on this kind of premise? I can therefore I should?

I’m not laughing at Maddison, she might look like a woman but she is just twelve years old and why would anyone expect her to have any better reasonable argument that any other twelve year-old girl? Because she looks more mature? Maybe there is some overwhelming power of appearance that convinces people this girl is mature, but if you consider what comes out of her mouth instead of how tall she is then you might see through the illusion. Maddison should be free to think these kinds of thoughts, sure, but should they be getting reported in the Australian media for the whole country to consider? Shouldn’t they be getting discussed in the playground at school with her friends:

“It’s not fair, mum and dad won’t let me but I should be able to model like Elle and Kate because I can fit into their clothes?”

“YEAH!”

But that’s not happening. Instead this young girl is defending herself to the entire nation and regardless of what she looks like she is just twelve years old and moving towards the editorial modeling world.

Teen girls' texts, e-mails bare more than their souls; 20 percent of girls send nude photo

Growing numbers of young girls are sending racy images of themselves to guys through cyberspace, according to a new survey.

More than two in 10 tech-savvy teenagers admit to e-mailing or texting nude, or semi-nude photos of fashion models and posting them on online.

The research shows most snaps are meant solely for the recipient, but they often get passed around among friends with one-third of teen boys and one-quarter of teen girls saying they have seen other people's raunchy shots.

"Sending or posting sexually suggestive content, both images or messages, is much more prevalent than most people recognize."

"I think with a lot of young people, it's a time of experimentation in many areas, the problem is there's no turning back once you press send." This is not a work of promotional modeling.

"This to me is like a cyber tattoo."

The online survey questioned 1,280 teens and 20-somethings about their sex-tech habits and found saucy cyber snaps is not just a trend among young girls.

One in five male teenagers said they have engaged in "sex-ting." Thirty-three percent of 20- to 26-year-olds do it as well.

The online behavior can spill into other areas of life, with nearly 25% of teens saying swapping sexy photos makes them more aggressive and forward in person. About about 33% admit it makes dating and hooking up more likely.
